History of Franklin School
The Franklin School that stands today is the 3rd version of such school. With construction on the site starting in 1865, the school was replaced in 1899 with a new school. The 3rd version of the school is remembered very similarly to the Poe School of Detroit. With a addition added in 1922 that later became the full school after demolition of the original 1899 build between 1968 and 1973. While Franklin was a relatively big school, it’s student population saw drops early on, as early as the 50s and 60s with the construction of the Lodge and I-75 freeways. Like most Detroit Schools, student enrollment dropped into the 2000s, however Franklins fate had been served years earlier, with some accounts suggesting the 1980s and 90s, when it was turned into a adult education center. By 1998 the adult education center had moved out and it was briefly reused as a elementary school, however by 2004 the school was closed, but was reopened as the Burton International academy just a year later in 2005. The school was closed for good in 2011 and was purchased in 2014 by Dennis Kefallinos, a Detroit speculator that owns many abandoned proprieties in the city even to this day including M. M. Rose School, the former Southwest Detroit Hospital, St Albertus, and more. Since being abandoned similar to Delta Prep School, Franklin has been known as a big hangout spot for squatters, with no exception on abandonedcommercialdetroit’s visit to the school.
Recollection from the author
Franklin was a school, we knew would give us a hard time going in. For the first about 20 mins it was dead quiet, however on cue with what we had been told we heard it, squatters! In multiple parts of the school, however we never saw them, only heard. Which is a first for the most part.
