History of Post Intermediate School

Post Intermediate School is a school in Northwest Detroit, that was built in 1930, a second addition was to be built in 1931 however was delayed until 1955 with help from a 1949 millage which added additions to many of Detroit’s Public Schools, along with many new schools built throughout the 50s. The 1955 addition would add a gymnasium and a swimming pool. It shared many of its utility work with the nearby Fitzgerald Elementary School, including a tunnel leading to a shared boiler house for the two schools. Due to declining enrollment throughout the 2000s, and its very close proximity to Fitzgerald it was decided to close Post Intermediate in 2006. Today the Fitzgerald School has been renamed to the Mary Mcleod Bethune Elementary Middle School, after many merges of schools in the area. Since closure Post has suffered extensive water damage along with scrapping, however many areas remain in ok condition, the tunnel leading to the shared boiler house has flooded.

Recollection from the author

Upon Entering Hutchison it was the start of a new adventure for me. This was officially me completing my long term goal of Urban Exploration, to explore a Detroit Public School which I thought were all secured heavily but I soon found out some were owned by the lank bank. Of which Hutchison was one, upon entering the school for the first time it was a sense of into the dark wide open, A new frontier of sorts of something I truly had never seen before. Going in I knew the abandoned schools of Detroit were some of the best gems of the abandonment of Detroit but it wasn’t till I entered were I saw that come to light.
